Creating a corridor from Canberra to batemans bay would gain us valuable land for the extension of Canberra, and a dedicated port, not just a naval base. The suburbia sprawl would enable the city to grow exponentially. If we look at the cities in Melbourne, Hume springs to mind, these are areas carved up into zones for a city within a city, within a state.

The ACT has areas of land that cannot be extended into, as their designation is a national park, thus limiting the range from the city itself. running a border from the tip and bottom of the ACT to the sea would certainly create a larger area, and this area would provide the regional towns with the governance that would be local, not deferring to Sydney for their policies and appeals for funding or assistance.

The time taken to drive from batemans bay to canberra is far less than that taken to drive to sydney - this would ensure that council members weren't disadvantaged and that decisions could be made quickly. The other benefit would be the inclusion of Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and surrounds, enabling those citizens access to a larger budget for the completion of road projects, infrastructure upgrades and health services. Queanbeyan hospital could become the 3rd public hospital in the canberra system.
